Country Guest House
The Country Guest House is an extension to a stunning Arts and Crafts property nestled in the heart of Surrey. Built under Permitted Development, the challenge was to create a design that not only honored the existing character of the main house but also reflected the Chinese heritage of the clients—while adhering to the strict 4-meter maximum ridge height limit. This required a thoughtful and nuanced approach to design, blending traditional craftsmanship with cultural influence, all within a relatively modest spatial envelope.
The design achieves a seamless integration with the main house, drawing on its distinctive Arts and Crafts detailing, while incorporating elements that evoke the clients' Chinese heritage, such as subtle references in the materials and layout. This fusion creates a harmonious space that feels both rooted in the past and forward-looking.
Inside, the guest house is styled as a modern country home, with an emphasis on comfort and simplicity. Exposed beams and vaulted ceilings give the space an air of rustic elegance, while minimalist furnishings provide a striking contrast. The play of ceiling heights throughout the interior introduces a sense of rhythm and dynamism, guiding the experience of moving through the space. This careful balance between tradition, culture, and modern design results in a guest house that feels both timeless and contemporary, offering a welcoming retreat that is unique in every detail.
