How can you extend a white building while preserving its character and enhancing its presence? This question guided our approach to a 1970s end-of-terrace home. Many local extensions felt disconnected architecturally, often using tiled dormers that clash with the original structure. We chose a muted tone to blend seamlessly with the environment, resulting in a modern yet harmonious addition that respects and elevates the original architecture.

Loft Within a Loft – Working with a Challenging Compact Space

This is a project that initially felt impossible due to extreme space constraints and awkward proportions. The goal was to create a second bedroom within a top-floor flat with very limited head height. The freehold status of the flat and the need to preserve the integrity of the shared structure presented a significant challenge.

We were able to unlock space through creative design. By varying ceiling heights, we enhanced verticality. Space-efficient stairs provide access to the new bedroom while maintaining an open feel. Strategic use of skylights and windows became the key to welcoming natural light.  The result is a bedroom that feels surprisingly spacious and that offers stunning views over South London. This project demonstrates how innovative design can transform even the most restricted spaces into beautiful, functional living areas.

Black Box Loft – Defying Convention

In traditional architecture, windows shrink with height. Black Box Loft challenges this convention. Instead, this loft extension incorporates expansive bifold doors and a balcony in order to celebrate stunning views across Chiswick. Suspended between two brick piers, the bold black box form makes a striking contemporary architectural statement that contrasts with the original house and neighbouring dormers.
